Sequels/Prequels – its importance in the industry and success…

In modern days, sequels and prequels are becoming very popular. It is made when its parent movie is successful in terms of popularity, plot, story, earnings etc. And now a day it is preferred by producers and directors, as there is less risk because of its already known popularity in terms of story, plot, actors etc. For example, SPIDERMAN 3 (Sam Raimi, 2007), in terms of plot and everything was not very good, but due to the huge popularity of the previous two movies it was most successful in terms of average box office earnings of around $376m. But this is not the case often, cause sequels of movies like STAR WARS (George Lucas, 1977). LORD OF THE RINGS (Peter Jackson, 2001) are not only successful in terms of earnings, but they also came up with well‐developed plot, excellent story and breath‐taking creation. In my research, I wanted to find out after a very successful movie, when the directors came up with sequels and prequels, were they always successful.

What is Sequel?

Modern Cinema is characterized by categories of generic production. Each category has a combination of unique and overlapping features, which makes them together, in the manner in which they intertwine, diverge, and reunite, a fascinating feature of modern generic film making. Here is a brief description of each of them.

Sequel and Prequel:

A film sequel announces a definite narrative development from its original, in which characters and elements of plot progress in a continuation, occasionally with a nod to the “cliffhanger” serials of the 1930 onwards. As a commercial phenomenon and the sequel is associated primarily with post‐studio system, Hollywood and films such as JAWS (Steven Spielberg, 1975), Rocky (John Avildson, 1976), and Star Wars (George Lucas, 1977). In contrast, the narrative of a film prequel, though produced after the original movie, is always set before the events of that film, often exploring the development of its’ central characters. Examples of prequels include INDIANA JONES AND THE TEMPLE OF DOOM (Steven Spielberg, 1984), and STAR WARS: THE PHANTOM MENACE (George Lucas, 1999).

Remake:

A remake is a film that stands in a pronounced inter textual relationship with an earlier film, highlighting the element of reproduction inherent in Hollywood Cinema. While clearly inter‐related to its source film the remake will often differentiate itself in terms of variation and revision of narrative or even genre. THE SEVEN SAMURAI (AKIRA KUROSAWA, 1954) has been remade as a western – The Magnificent Seven (John Sturges, 1960)‐and Sci‐Fi Fantasy‐Battle Beyond The Stars (Jimmy Murakami, 1980). This relationship between remake and original may in fact go no further than a form of loose inspiration. For example, the two recent versions of the Italian Job (F. Gary Gray, 2003) and Ocean’s Eleven (Steven Soderbergh, 2001) share little more with the originals than their title, final setting and the name of special character.
Adaption:

The adapting of non‐filmic source texts for the cinema has tradionally looked to literally material for inspiration; novels – HARRY POTTER AND THE PHILOSOPER’S STONE (Chris Columbus, 2001) – theatrical plays – GLENGARRY GLEN ROSS (James Foley, 1992) – even television series have also been spun off as a fruitful source of potential film material, including – oddly perhaps – many from UK TV sitcoms. Films such as X‐Files (Rob Bowman, 1998), seek to capitalize on the already established audience cultivated by recent series, while the success of STARSKY & HUTCH (Todd Phillips, 2004) seems to rest with current nostalgia for Seventies pop‐culture in general rather than with the popularity of the original series itself with contemporary viewers. Since the 1960s, and perhaps earlier, Hollywood used comics as a source and since the 1990s, Hollywood has expanded the range of source media, looking to video games – MORTAL COMBAT (Paul Anderson, 1995) – comics & graphic nobles – X MEN (Bryan Singer, 2000) – and even roller–coasters – PIRATES OF THE CARRIBEAN (Gore Verbinski, 2003)!

Film Series:

The film series refers to a type of film production that belongs to the studio system stage in Hollywood history. It primarily denotes successive films in which a set of familiar and stable characters reappear in differing environments enacting often generically similar adventures, for example, the CHARLIE CHAN movies or TARZAN. Unlike the sequel and prequel each film is self‐contained often without reference to events from earlier films. The nearest Hollywood has to a continuation of the film series mode of production is with JAMES BOND.

ReImaging:

Unlike a remake where there is often a considerable amount of overlap in terms of characterization, narrative, or even direct quotation from the source film, a re‐imaging is a label often attached to film projects that have sought to move away from the source film while still retaining the cultural capital attached to the earlier title. A re‐imaging will often signal an attempt to shift, often drastically not simplify the source of a film, but its entire emotional or generic tone. A recent example would be THE SHEPFORD WIVES (Frank Oz, 2004) in which a 1970s thriller with an explicit feminist agenda has been recast, thirty years on, in the mode of camp comedy.

Homage:

A movie that acknowledges the influence of an earlier film or filmmaker and references that influence in its narrative or stylistic form, as is the case with Brian de Palma’s BLOW OUT (1981) and Michelangelo Antonioni’s BLOW UP (1966).

Retour Aux Sources:

It means “return to the source” this type of remake acknowledges an earlier film that shares the same original inspiration but from which it wishes to distance itself. For example Steven Soderbergh has described his movie SLOARIS (2002) not as a remake of the famous TARKOVSKY (1972) film but as a second version of the original novel from which the Russian film was adapted. Similar claims were made for TIM BURTON”S re‐imaging of PLANET OF THE APES (2001). This is often a strategy adopted by producers who wish to restart a franchise that has failed financially, and can be seen in the promotional discourse surrounding BATMAN BEGINS (2004) where, after the failure of BATMAN & ROBIN (Joel Schumacher, 1997) the return to the style of the early comics has been heavily emphasized.

Why Film Makers from both early days and modern days are So Keen to Follow up a Successful Movie with a Sequel???

There is a long history of sequels, in early days many film was shown in serial form. After that, sequels were made to earn money concentrating on a single idea, but since 1990s, there is a revolution in sequel making. In the summer of 2003 and 2004, sequels dominated the box office. But the difference from early days is now a days, a sequel has even better chance to exceed the original movie in terms of creativity and financially. And for these reasons we have even seen two sequels of MATRIX (Wachowski Brothers, 1999) coming in the same year 2003. There are lots of films that were released on regular intervals such as HARRY POTTER and LORD OF THE RINGS and thus build up a great interest in audience. This was possible as the film were made in a similar pattern, so the creator was able to plan everything beforehand. On the other hand, a sequel may even take twelve to thirteen years to come, the best example is TERMINATOR-3: RISE OF THE MACHINES (Jonathan Mostow,2003) which was released 12 years after the first sequel TERMINATOR-2: THE JUDGEMENT DAY (James Cameron1991), and that shows thathow much the popularity and success of a film can inspire the producersand directors that even after twelve years they come with the next versionof the movie, and even most recently they have come up with the TVserials for TERMINATOR with the title “TERMINATOR: THE SARAHCONOR CHRONICLES”.

Previously, for a long time, the only idea to make sequels was to minimize the risk of a film, and it was relatively easy in terms of creation, gaining popularity as the sequel was being played on the same title, actors, story and may already have a fan base from its successful parent movie. “It was a relatively lazy process. The calculation went something like: the first film made (say) $100m. The follow up sequel will make a minimum of 60 per cent of this amount; therefore we can guarantee $60m in revenues. For some, the drop in revenues could also justify a reduced budget. Although fairly cynical it generally held up that way.” (Hancock, 2004, 9)

Not only these, film makers are also adapting stories from novels, video games, comics. Films like Harry Potter, Mortal Combat, XMen, Jurassic Park etc are perfect examples. And in most cases, they were successful. For that, the creators sometimes end up making 5‐6 movies on the same plot, actors or idea.

SUCCESSFUL SEQUELS:

I want to begin this section with a summary of the stats of the most successful sequels and prequels of all time that is taken from “MOVIE SEQUELS” by the author David Hancock (2004):

  1. The highest grossing series of films ever is Star Wars, the five movies earning $1.4bn at the US box office (this does not include the money earned by re‐release of the original films in the 1990s). The only other series of titles to have earned over, $1bn is the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

  2. The most successful performing series in terms of average BO per title is SpiderMan, whose two titles have earned an average of $376m each. Second‐placed is Shrek, which averages out at $351m per title.

  3. The average time span for a series of films is 6.1 years. There are nine series (out of 56) that have lasted for 10 years or more. While some of these are considered great films, longevity doesn't necessarily mean greatness or high total revenues.

  4. The highest number of movies in a series between 1980 and 2004 is the Friday the 13th series, with 11 titles (this includes the last double header Jason vs Fredcjy). The total series gross is $309m, and the series was definitely flagging until the double header revived the brand.

  5. First films in a series took 38 per cent of total revenues earned. The second in a series (i.e., the first sequel) took a total of 36.1 per cent of total revenues. This indicates that, overall, a sequel performs only marginally poorer at the box office than the original film. The average revenues earned by the first film in US stands at $136.8m, dropping to $130.1m for the second film.

  6. Sci‐fi is probably title most successful genre for sequels. Not only does one series extend to 10 movies (Star Trek), the average revenues earned by the second title are an impressive 41.6 per cent above Title 1.
  7. Paramount has distributed the most sequels since 1980 (28) although most of these franchises have now been exhausted.

  8. The highest frontloading rates (revenues earned in first week) for sequels come, not surprisingly, in the most recent years. The average proportion of total revenues accounted for by week 1 has been rising since the 1980s. The average was 22.7 per cent in the 1980s, 28.9 per cent in the 1990s and 40.6 per cent in the 2000s (so far).

  9. May is the most popular month for releasing sequels over the years, with an average of 29 releases. There is a predominance of action titles released in May (37.9 per cent), and sci‐fi is also popular (24.1 per cent).

Here is a little chart for top 10 sequel series ranked by total box office in $:

  1. Star Wars - $ 1,422,777,379

  2. Lord of the Rings - $ 1,033,551,625

  3. Harry potter - $ 824,159,150

  4. Jurassic Park - $ 760,796,939

  5. Spiderman - $ 752,776,458

  6. Star Trek - $ 750,570,318

  7. Batman - $ 705,358,507

  8. Shrek - $ 701,175,984

  9. Indiana Jones - $ 603,078,693

  10. Matrix - $ 592,204,863

Now, with the stats and information given above, it is clearer now why sequels or prequels are becoming dominant in modern days film industry. And for these reasons, I think film makers are keen to follow up a successful movie with one or more sequels and even prequels.

Few Examples and why they are successful?

If I want to give examples of successful sequels or prequels, the few names that strike immediately in my brain are the likes of STAR WARS, HARRY POTTER, MISSION IMPOSSIBLE and LORD OF THE RINGS. As an individual audience I simply love these movies because of its outstanding plot, story, creativity in terms of editing, lighting, visual effects, sound effects, screenplay and awesome performance by the cast.

LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy to me is the best ever series only because of the epic filmmaking. And for its brilliance the trilogy have already won 17 Oscars and another 245 awards of all kinds. As a three‐part film, The Lord of the Rings can transport viewers effortlessly to other lands where heroism, love and sacrifice make perfect sense. There are many films, which, after very successful original movies cannot meet the expectation in the sequels. But this was not the case with LORD OF THE RINGS. The final installment “The Return of the King” was make‐or‐break proposition. After the first two episodes, it created so much expectations and anticipation amongst all fans, that it was a real test for Peter Jackson if he has all the necessary finishing touch. If “The Return of the King” failed, the trilogy, celebrated for its detail and excellence, would end up as a disappointment as the final stage of The Matrix film. And The Return of the King necessarily has many, many endings that was a must. Frodo’s (Elijah Wood) painful adventure as the ring bearer finally came to an end, but only after surviving the most harrowing threat ever. Gollum, the trilogy’s most fascinating character, made actor Andy Serkis a household name. It was released in a year full of cinematic disappointments, but “The Return of the King” had a giddy perfection about it. Its success made The Lord of the Rings a new benchmark of excellence which future trilogy, sequels, and sequels must try to match or surpass.

The next best movie series to me in terms of sequels is Star Wars, not only the sequels but the 3 prequels were even better for me. For me, other than earnings, the whole series is successful because I watched it in the order of Episode 1‐6, but later when I came to know that Episode 1‐3 are made after 4‐6 as prequels, I was very surprised, cause so well was the plot and story linked up, that I never thought Episode 1‐3 was made after 4‐6 as prequels. I really have to appreciate the charisma of George Lucas, because even after watching all 6 episodes, 3 times each, I never feel bore when I think of watching it again. The whole series is appealing to audience of all age limits, the kids like it because it’s fun, flashy and exciting. Adults like it because its clever, romantic and have impressive visuals, and for me a huge number of older people like it because after living a boring life in planet earth they dream of going into a world like this!!!

The last example I should give is Spiderman 3 (Sam Raimi, 2007). As per box office earnings, it was a huge hit. But to be honest, after two such great movies Spiderman (2001) and Spiderman 2 (2004), all the hardcore Spiderman fans were expecting so much from the 3rd movie, but it was a complete disappointed for the convoluted storylines and sub‐standard performance. There were too many villains considering the total runtime of the movie and some effects were really dodgy in few battles, for example the one with Goblin. Considering the story, plot, screenplay, cast performance, visual effects it was not up to the mark. Although after being so poor in all sorts of making, it was a box office hit, and in sub‐continent, mainly in India it is the biggest ever Hollywood hit movies, earning over $14 million in the first month. The story is same with Mission Impossible 3 (J.J. Abrams, 2006), even with such a poor creation, its popularity from first two movies were enough to make it the 14th top earnings movies in 2006.

So it’s worth following up a successful movie with a sequel

My point is coming back again and again, that a sequel followed by a great parent movie, is not always great in terms of making, but the already gained popularity is enough to make it very very successful in terms of earnings. From 1950s till now, the idea of making sequel, prequel, remakes etc are getting popular. To add to these, recently it has become a trend that a good movie must follow up with a 2nd part, 3rd part and sometimes even up to 6th part. There are always less risks, because you don’t need a new idea that may be or may not be appreciated by the fans, or it may be a flop in the box office. But when you already have a storyline that is known to everyone, even have a fan base on it, life is much easier for the production house, director etc. As a result, the creators now are not even worried to put a extremely high budget for a sequel (for example, the budget for Spiderman 3 was a whopping $350 million). And I think it’s worth taking the risk in terms of everything it matters.
